A hidden secret
The Vale of Neath, a few miles away from the Aberavon Beach hotel has a hidden secret. Waterfall Country as it has come to be known contains a diversity of waterfalls in a very small area. Rich in history, the deep gorges of the rivers Mellte, Hepste and Nedd Fechan, between the villages of Pontneddfechan and Ystradfellte, provide opportunities for the casual and more experienced walker.
The falls are formed by the alignment of hard millstone grit over the same soft limestone that leads to so many caves in the area.
Access to the falls
The falls range from the easy access of Aberdulais, where you can enjoy a history of local tin plate working as well as the falls themselves, to more spectacular and harder to reach areas for the avid explorer.
Many of the falls are spectacular and are worth visiting more than once through the changing seasons.
Because some of the areas can be slippy during high rainfall, we recommend you check the weather and your walking shoes before you go exploring.
A free exhibition in Pontneddfechan Tourist Information Centre illustrates the development of waterfalls in the area and a booklet "Waterfall Walks" can be purchased.
